NASHVILLE MARATHON 2009 RACE REPORT

It was very warm on Thursday 23rd April when Jim Mundy, Warren D’Rozario, Bernie Barnaby and I arrived in Nashville and the forecast was that it would be even hotter on race day. On the Friday we registered for the race in the morning and then met up with Rich Holmes, a friend of mine from North Carolina. Early on the Saturday morning I dressed in my Roman Centurion costume, Jim put on his serf’s outfit and Warren donned a coloured wig and then the 5 of us walked to the race start, some 2 miles away. At the 7am race start the temperature was around 60 degrees, but it was 80 degrees by the time we reached 20 miles and was still climbing. It is fairly unusual in America for anyone to run races in anything other than running gear. Our costumes turned out to be a great hit with the crowds around the course and many of the live bands playing along the route yelled out encouragement as we passed their stands. Many of the crowd mistook me for a gladiator or a Trojan, but this didn’t dampen their enthusiasm. Jim ran with me the whole way and we finished together in 4 hours 24 minutes and 52 seconds (1176th and 1177th out of 4122 runners). Jim required treatment at the medical tent after the race for heat exhaustion, but recovered quickly. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed the day and this was a great race on which to conclude my quest to run a marathon in all 50 US States. Should anyone still wish to make a donation to the Grove House Hospice they can do so by visiting my web page, which is http://www.justgiving.com/jackbrooks1

Jack's 50th USA Marathon

On 25th April I shall be running the Nashville Country Music Marathon in Tennessee. On completion I shall be the 2nd person from the UK to complete a marathon in all 50 US States. It will also be my 200th marathon (that amounts to 5,242 miles of racing). As I come from a Roman Town and am secretary of the 100 marathon club I thought it would be appropriate to run the marathon dressed as a Roman Centurion and see if I could raise some much needed funding for Grove House, which is a local hospice, supporting those with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

I have set up a web page with Just Giving. I appreciate that money is tight during the current recession, but if you are in a position to offer support this would be greatly appreciated. The website is http://www.justgiving.com/jackbrooks1

Many thanks.
Yours sincerely
